<div class="section1"><div class="Normal">hubli: she is just 5, and even before learning how to use her hands well, she will lose a finger to gangrene. that one of sridevi''s fingertips is slowly decomposing has thrown up a few questions: was it due to negligence of doctors attending to her at the karnataka institute of medical sciences (kims) hospital? or undernourishment as the child is from a poor family? whatever the reason, sridevi is in a pathetic condition.
sources at kims revealed that the child was brought to the hospital with a head injury on january 20. ``she was normal like any other child her age, but due to medical negligence, sridevi will be losing one finger on the left hand.'''' a duty doctor who did not want to be identified, confirmed that the child will have to be referred to a surgeon. however, he disagreed that it was a case of medical negligence. ``sridevi is from a poor family and was undernourished. and she was not given proper treatment before she was brought to kims. such cases do come to kims and in my 10 years of service here, i have come across hundreds of such cases.'''' says parvathi, the child''s mother: ``she fell off a building and hurt her head. the local doctors could not treat the wound.'''' parvathi and her family are agricultural labourers and residents of lingasugur taluk of raichur district. parvathi is yet to be reconciled to the fact that her little girl will have to go without a finger. but what is puzzling is how a head injury led to gangrene in the finger. though doctors at kims describe it as normal, another noted doctor of hubli says, ``it is unusual. undernourishment should not lead to gangrene. either it should be a case of vaso-constriction or due to shortage of oxidation.'''' if any damage is caused while administering saline drips, gangrene could develop on the local skin. and while shifting the child, if heavy pressure was put on the finger and ignored later, there is a possibility, the doctor pointed out. parvathi is worried as it is almost 18 days since the child was admitted at kims. and going by the complication of the case, it seems she will be forced to stay on for some more days. <span style="" font-weight:="" bold="">`pvt hospital messed up'' </span>when contacted, kims director v.n. biradar said after falling from a height, the child suffered a big wound on the scalp. but she was not treated properly at the private hospital where she was admitted. ``sridevi was brought to kims as she was suffering from septicemia with pus entering the blood. if it was a case of negligence, the child would have died by now." </div> </div>
